JAVIER CASTRO MÁRQUEZ
SCREENWRITER - FILM DIRECTOR EDITOR - MAKER

BACK
During the editing process we decided to use VHS material compiled for years by the family, to mold a full visual spectrum of the character and the story being told. With this, around 85% of the film was made with archive material. The first version lasted 40 minutes, and we had to take hard and emotional decisions to reach the final 20 minutes.
About three weeks before finishing the short-film, an unexpected event that affected the story occurred. Our editing script changed and we had to take our cameras to shoot the real ending of the documentary right away.
This project taught me about the construction of personal stories and the importance of getting involved with them. But overall I understood how telling a story and making a film out of it, can help you understand yourself and your surrounding in a better way.

Documentary short-film
Role: Director's assistant - Editor
Producer: Lida Prada / Valentina Cote
Storyline: Norma Anaya travels to The Netherlands to start a new life. She finds love and independence, but starts getting depressed because of the cultural shock, and the fact that the distance affects her relationship with her mother and her sister. This, and an unexpected event, forces her to take a decision: staying in The Netherlands with all she has got or going back home in Colombia. -
Working as editor in this documentary was a great challenge. The director Daniela Anaya had compiled videos and audio notes sent by her sister since her first travel, two years before the making of the documentary.
